The themes of this trip were (a) the Underground Railroad Movement, (b) The Civil War and (c) American Literature, taking in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland. The trip was for 31 days from mid May to mid June 2011, staying at ten locations used as bases to explore the surrounding areas:
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – for Downtown Philadelphia, Independence National Park and Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site
West Chester, Pennsylvania – for Kennett Square and Underground Railroad Museums
York, Pennsylvania – for York, Pennsylvania State Capitol (Harrisburg), Gettysburg National Military Park and Lancaster Amish Area
Winchester, Virginia – for Winchester, Frederick and Harpers Ferry National Historic Park
Stanardsville, Virginia – for the Blue Ridge Mountains (Blue Ridge Parkway), Monticello, Montpelier, Lynchburg, Appomattox and Staunton
Roanoke, Virginia – for Virginia Museum of Transportation and Booker T National Park
Galax, Virginia – for Galax, Blue Ridge Mountains (Blue Ridge Parkway), Abingdon, Wytheville and Floyd
Hillsborough, North Carolina – for Hillsborough, the site of Occoneechee Speedway and Burwell School
Petersburg, Virginia – for Petersburg, Petersburg National Battlefield Park and Richmond
Manassas, Virginia – for Frederickburg National MIlitary Park, Bull Run and Manassas Battlegrounds and the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum
